A freighter carrying logs northward to Borneo sank during a storm in the Java Sea, and all 55 people aboard were missing and presumed dead, the country’s official news agency said Monday.

The 490-ton M. V. Binter sank Sunday morning near Bawean Island, about 165 miles south of Borneo and 530 miles northeast of Jakarta, the Antara News Agency said.

The freighter, bound for Sampit in western Borneo, left Surabaya in East Java last Friday with 15 crew members and 40 passengers and carrying 300 tons of logs, the agency said.
