Mecham Foes Exceed Needed Signatures
County officials Monday said they have validated more than enough signatures to force a recall election for Gov. Evan Mecham, who has been under fire from minorities and women for allegedly racist and sexist remarks.
However, the findings of the county recorders will not be considered official until they are reviewed by Arizona’s secretary of state.
Mecham’s opponents needed the signatures of 216,746 registered voters to force a recall. To date, county officials have declared valid 240,512 signatures on recall petitions, according to figures provided by Maricopa County Recorder Keith Poletis and other recorders.
Nearly 400,000 signatures were gathered during a four-month campaign.
