About 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the Sweetwater River on Tuesday afternoon, the county Department of Health Services reported. Although the river drains into the Sweetwater Reservoir in Spring Valley, the spill is not considered a threat to water supplies there.
The spill occurred near the intersection of Californias 94 and 54 when a utilities crew working near a pump station in the area damaged a sewer main, said Lyn Wallis, a Department of Health Services spokesman.
While the Sweetwater Reservoir provides domestic water supplies, no water is currently being drawn from the lake and there are no immediate plans to do so, Wallis said. According to officials who operate the reservoir, the spill is considered too small to pose a health threat to future water use.
Since there is no public access to the Sweetwater River between the point of the spill and the reservoir, no warning signs have been posted, Wallis said.
