The European Community said it had exempted a joint Italian-Japanese copier producing venture from competition rules. The EEC executive commission said that although the joint venture set up by Olivetti of Italy and Canon of Japan will restrict competition between the two companies, it is justified because it brings advanced technology to Europe. The new company, Olivetti-Canon Industriale Spa, designs and manufactures copying machines and laser printers.
