Obituaries : PASSINGS : Smith Wendell Green; Political Writer
Smith Wendell Green, 70, a journalist who in 1936 was elected the first black president of the Associated Men’s Students at Los Angeles City College. A longtime political writer and reporter for the Los Angeles Sentinel and the California Eagle, Smith at his death owned the Afro-American News Bureau in Los Angeles which disseminated news from City Hall. During World War II, Green trained with the 369th Air Squadron at Tuskegee Institute where blacks learned to fly in a segregated environment. In Los Angeles on Saturday of unknown causes pending a coroner’s report.
