Share

Steve Smith, a political activist involved in environmental and gay rights issues, has been appointed to the Planning Commission.

Smith, whose appointment last week by Mayor Alan Viterbi won the unanimous approval of the City Council, will fill the spot left vacant by the resignation last November of Peter Weinberger.

A former aide to Assembly Speaker Willie Brown Jr., Smith was appointed to the Democratic National Committee in 1980.

Weinberger, who was appointed by Viterbi in 1986, touched off a storm of criticism after accusing the council of racism and referring to opponents of a defeated development project as a “lynch mob.”
