Firefighters contained a 3,075-acre forest fire in Sequoia National Park that had burned for more than a week, threatening but finally not touching a grove of giant Sequoias. Officials said the cost of suppressing the blaze, apparently started by a discarded cigarette, was $1.9 million. Nine firefighters suffered minor injuries, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman said.
