The Bixby Ranch House on La Linda Drive in Bixby Knolls and the Houser Building at 2740-46 E. Broadway have been named local historical landmarks by the Long Beach City Council.
The 9-bedroom, 5-bathroom ranch house was completed in 1890 for George H. Bixby and served as headquarters for the Bixby Ranch operations. Designed in the Colonial Revival style by the San Francisco firm of Coxhead and Coxhead, the 6,978-square-foot house has a gambrel roof, bay windows and gable dormers. It is owned by members of the Revan Komaroff family, which bought the house more than four decades ago.
The Houser Building is a 3-story brick commercial/residential building constructed in 1929 and designed in the Italianate style by architect Joseph Halstead Roberts. He designed about 70 Long Beach buildings, including the St. Regis apartments. The Houser Building was constructed for John T. Houser, a local lawyer who lived with his family behind the building, on 2nd Street. A bridge from the back of their house connected the structures.
The city can delay demolition of an historic structure for up to a year while it negotiates with the owner to preserve the building.
