Local News in Brief : 600 Employees Flee Postal Center

An unidentified white powder spilled onto a post office conveyor belt from a bottle bearing a radioactive symbol, forcing 600 workers to evacuate the bulk mail center in Bell for more than an hour Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

A Geiger counter recorded no radioactivity in the powder, but county health officials planned to analyze the substance, said Toby Staheli, a health department spokeswoman. Two postal workers were checked and no exposure to radioactivity was found, Postal Inspector Steve Schneringer said.

The workers called in authorities about 1:30 p.m. after noticing the radioactive symbol on the white bottle, which tipped over as it moved along a conveyor belt used for damaged packages, Schneringer said. Postal inspectors were not immediately able to locate the bottle’s mailing container.
