The World : U.N. Team for Angola OKd

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to send 70 military observers to Angola to monitor the withdrawal of 50,000 Cuban troops as part of a plan that would bring independence to Namibia. South Africa insisted on the Cuban withdrawal from Angola--where the Cubans have backed the Marxist regime against rebels supported by Pretoria--in exchange for agreeing to Namibian independence. South Africa has ruled Namibia, also known as South-West Africa, since capturing it from Germany in World War I. The U.N. observer mission is expected to cost $20.4 million during its 31-month mandate.
