Sudan confirmed that it thwarted an attempt to overthrow Prime Minister Sadek Mahdi last week, arresting 25 people. Defense Minister Abdul Maguid Khalil said the situation has been brought under control but gave no other details. News reports earlier indicated that troops had crushed an attempted coup on Saturday. The reports said that those arrested included retired military officers and civilian officials from the government of Jaafar Numeiri, who was ousted in a 1985 coup.
