Poland’s Communist Party shuffled its leadership, ousting six Politburo members and bringing in eight new people. The changes, voted by a plenary meeting of the Central Committee, enlarged the party’s ruling body from 15 to 17 members but did not affect its leading personalities. Stanislaw Ciosek, a non-voting member of the Politburo, was the most prominent figure promoted. He became a full member again after having been dropped from voting membership last June. Ciosek has the reputation of a party moderate and has been involved in negotiations to set up stalled talks between the government and the banned Solidarity trade union.
