College Baseball : Canyons Clinches Second in WSC With 8-3 Victory
Adam Grant delivered twice in the clutch as visiting College of the Canyons defeated Bakersfield, 8-3, Thursday to clinch second place in the Western State Conference.
Grant delivered a two-out, two-run single to highlight the Cougars’ four-run fourth inning.
In the eighth inning, Grant added a two-run double--again with two out--to extend Canyons’ lead to 8-3.
Grant finished three for five with four runs batted in.
Teammate Chris Joy, who was two for five, launched a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Jeff Frith-Smith (7-4) pitched a complete game and struck out six.
Ventura defeated Cuesta, 15-1, to clinch the conference championship.
In another Western State Conference game:
Santa Barbara 3, Pierce 1--Host Santa Barbara scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning on a fielding error, two hits and a passed ball to break a 1-1 tie.
Pete Dragaloski (4-6) threw a seven-hitter, struck out nine and walked three for Pierce (15-18, 8-10 in conference play).
Teammate Scott Cadenhead was two for four and hit his second home run of the season in the second inning.
Ron Kissick threw a six-hitter, struck out three and walked four for Santa Barbara (6-12 in conference play).
