Gao Min, Xiong Ni Lead Chinese Team to Victory in World Cup Diving Meet

China’s superbly trained and conditioned divers easily won the team title in the World Cup Diving Championships Friday.

Winning five of the six phases of competition for men and women--one- and three-meter springboard and 10-meter platform--the Chinese scored 579 points.

The United States, which beat China by two points for the title two years ago, had 552 and the Soviet Union was third with 521.

Gao Min, runner-up to teammate Yu Xiaoling in the women’s one-meter team event Thursday, outclassed the three-meter field with 537.27 points. Soviet Svetlana Alexeeva had 491.76, followed by Wendy Lucero with 484.38.

In the men’s platform event, which concluded the team segment of the five-day meet, 15-year-old Xiong Ni won with 637.20 points.
