Tigers’ Anderson Returns to California for Treatment of Exhaustion, Club Says
Manager Sparky Anderson of the Detroit Tigers has been sent to his home in Thousand Oaks for treatment of exhaustion, the team said Friday.
Clarence Livingood, Anderson’s physician and team doctor, said he recommended “complete rest because of physical exhaustion,” the Tigers said.
It was unknown how long Anderson will be away from the club. Coach Dick Tracewski will serve as interim manager during Anderson’s absence, General Manager Bill Lajoie said.
Tiger spokesman Dan Ewald declined to disclose specifics of Anderson’s ailment. Ewald said only that Anderson “is at home in California.”
The Tigers were 13-23 entering Friday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
Anderson, 55, has a 19-year major league managing record of 1,712-1,283, for a winning percentage of .571, eighth best of 20th-Century managers with at least 10 years’ experience.
Anderson led the 1984 Tigers to a five-game victory over the San Diego Padres in the World Series.
He is in his 11th season with Detroit after managing the Cincinnati Reds to World Series championships in 1975 and 1976 plus National League pennants in 1970 and 1972.
