Richard Vacar, deputy director of operations at Burbank Airport, said he will resign next month to become executive director of a Florida airport.

Vacar, 42, said Sunday he will assume the $73,000-a-year position at the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport on June 26. The Sarasota-Manatee Airport Authority offered Vacar the position Thursday, he said.

The Florida airport authority Thursday had rejected a bid by Lockheed Air Terminal, which operates Burbank Airport and is Vacar’s employer, to run the Florida airport, Vacar said. It could not afford to pay Lockheed’s fee but decided to hire Vacar, who said he applied for the position independently of Lockheed’s bid.

“It was time for me to move on to bigger responsibilities,” Vacar said. “I very much enjoyed working for Burbank Airport. It was a very good experience.”
