NATION : Wright Near Decision on Resigning
House Speaker Jim Wright, getting a lot of free--and conflicting--advice, said today that he intends to announce by week’s end whether he will resign or continue to fight ethics charges.
Returning to the Capitol after a holiday weekend in seclusion with his wife, Betty, Wright told reporters: “I think I know what I should do. I think I know what I believe to be in my best interest and in the interest of the institution.”
The embattled Texas Democrat had no immediate announcement about his future, but said, “I expect to have one before the week is out.”
Wright declined comment on the surprise decision of Rep. Tony Coelho (D-Merced) to resign rather than face an ethics investigation. Coelho is the No. 3 Democratic leader in the House.
