The four leaders elected to lead Hungary’s ruling Communist Party until the fall pledged to bury differences and work together for a new form of socialism that recognizes Western concepts of freedom. Over the weekend, the Central Committee elected Rezso Nyers, 66, to head the four-member Presidium charged with leading the party until a special party congress Oct. 7. Karoly Grosz was shunted aside from the party leadership, although he retains the title of general secretary. The shake-up took place after strong attacks on Grosz by reformers who regard him as already overtaken by changes he unleashed by ousting Janos Kadar as leader 13 months ago.
