South Korea said it has decided to stop its trawlers from drift-net fishing in the South Pacific. National Fisheries Administration executive Kim Sang Soo announced the decision at a conference organized in Fiji by the South Pacific Forum Fisheries Agency. Delegations from Japan and Taiwan, the other two Asian countries involved in drift-netting--also called gill-netting--were present. The fishing agency’s 16 member nations expressed concern that drift-netting is depleting their fishing resources. The topic is also a major environmental issue in the North Pacific.
