AUSTRALIA

In response to your article “G’bye California, G’day Australia,” by Sean Mitchell (June 25), I would like to say that I’m impressed by the fair treatment that you gave my country. It’s interesting to note people feeling safe to leave doors unlocked in this country. I wouldn’t--but I live in Sydney, which is more dangerous than some of our smaller cities.

I prefer our restrictions on setting up business. Government red tape can be a good thing. American airlines and their shaky standards could be improved with less laissez-faire. We at least can take a domestic airline and have a much better chance to make our destination. I’ve been to America (I love it) three times on American airlines and feel that I’ve tempted fate enough.

As for tipping, I find it abhorrent. I like one price, sales and service taxes included. Everyone should be paid decent wages to start with.

I could also write a letter praising America. It is a very beautiful country full of hospitable people. However, I’m trying to make a point.
