SPORTSCOPE : El Camino Registering Wrestlers for Halloween Open

Registration for the annual Halloween Open wrestling tournament is under way at El Camino College. The Oct. 28 event begins with weigh-ins at 6 a.m. in the gymnasium. Competition is divided into age categories ranging from 7 to 14 years old, high school freshman/sophomore, high school upper classmen, and open. A variety of weight classes is offered in all divisions with a maximum of 20 bouts going on at once. The entry fee is $10, or $15 at the door. Competitors need an Amateur Athletic Union membership card, which costs $6. For information call 715-3548.

Travel plans permitting because of the San Francisco earthquake, the University of Santa Clara and the University of San Francisco women’s volleyball teams will play at Loyola Marymount this weekend. The Lady Lions play host to Santa Clara tonight and San Francisco on Saturday night. Both West Coast Conference matches begin at 7:30 in Gersten Pavilion. Loyola is in second place in the WCC with a 6-1 mark (6-9 overall).

The men’s and women’s soccer teams at Cal State Dominguez Hills, in conjunction with the university’s International Day, will play host to a doubleheader Saturday against Chapman College. The No. 2-ranked Lady Toros (14-2) play Chapman at 11 a.m. and the men meet at 1 p.m. in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match. International food and drink booths will be located around the site.

The 185-yard par three fifth hole at Penmar Golf Course in Mar Vista was no problem for 74-year-old Richard Shappell of Inglewood recently. With a five-wood Shappell recorded the sixth hole in one of his career at the Los Angeles County course, according to starter Skip Belden. Two other area golfers aced their names into link record books recently. Mike Moreno of Carson holed out at Harbor Park’s par three fourth hole by dropping a nine-iron onto the green and rolling the ball into the cup. And the 128-yard second hole at Los Feliz was no match for Harry Kido of Gardena, who dropped a seven iron into the cup.

Ascot Raceway will have a 150-lap Figure 8 Enduro race for factory stocks and a demolition derby Saturday night at 7. For ticket information call 321-5323 or 515-5115. A purse of $50,000 will be up for grabs Oct. 27-28 when Ascot runs the Pacific Coast Nationals for non-winged sprint cars and midgets.

The Ice Castle International Training Center at Lake Arrowhead will have a ribbon cutting ceremony Oct. 28 to celebrate the opening of its new training surface. The facility, located near the town of Blue Jay, is the second mountain ice rink constructed by former South Bay businessman Walter Probst and his wife, Carol, a former professional skater.

Baseball and soccer camps will be offered at Cal State Dominguez Hills during the winter break Dec. 18-22. The Toro Christmas Baseball Camp, designed for players in grades one through 12, begins Dec. 18. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. The cost is $75. Toro Coach George Wing will run the program. To enroll, call 516-3765. Soccer Coach Marine Cano is offering instruction for boys and girls ages 6-13 beginning Dec. 19. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $65.
