No. 1 UCSD Defeats No. 2 La Verne

Diana Klintworth’s 19 kills led UC San Diego, top-ranked in NCAA Division III, to a 7-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-11 victory over No. 2 La Verne in a nonconference match Wednesday at UCSD.

Elizabeth Tan had 10 kills for the Tritons, and Stacy Simpson had 15 for La Verne (22-6).

UCSD (19-12) plays its final regular-season matches Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting U.S. International.

MEN’S SOCCER

A four-goal first half gave the University of San Diego all it needed to defeat visiting UC Irvine, 4-1, in a nonconference game at USD.

Tom Crane scored two goals and had one assist for USD (13-6-1), which kept its Division I playoff hopes alive with the victory. The Toreros close its regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. in a Big West Conference game against Loyola Marymount. UC Irvine is 3-14-1.

San Diego State played Cal State Northridge to a 0-0 tie in overtime in a nonconference game at Northridge. The Aztecs are 13-4-3.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego-based High Five America defeated visiting USC, 112-102, at Poway High School. USC center Ronnie Coleman had a game-high 38 points, but High Five America, led by Gabe Estaba with 20 points, had six players in double figures. High Five America improved to 2-0 at the start of its 25-game exhibition schedule.
