Glenn Anderson scored two goals as the Edmonton Oilers took over sole possession of first place in the Smyth Division by beating the Winnipeg Jets, 3-2, Thursday night at Edmonton.

But the victory was tarnished by the Oilers’ loss of goalie Grant Fuhr for 10 to 12 weeks with a shoulder injury that will be operated on Wednesday. Fuhr, who has a history of shoulder problems, was injured Dec. 16 in St. Louis when he fell on the left shoulder while trying to make a save. Initially, the injury--a dislocation--was not considered serious.

Playing in place of Fuhr, Bill Ranford stopped 27 shots. Winnipeg rookie Bob Essensa turned aside 19 shots.

The victory put the Oilers two points ahead of Calgary.

Pittsburgh 5, Washington 2--Mario Lemieux extended his league-leading scoring streak to 23 games with a goal and two assists as the Penguins beat the Capitals at Pittsburgh.

Dave Newell, NHL senior referee, left the game with a separated right shoulder suffered with 3:21 left in the first period, and NHL officials supervisor John Ashley suspended the game at that point. After an early intermission, it was resumed with linesman Dan Schachte taking over Newell’s duties.

Boston 4, Minnesota 2--Dave Christian and Bobby Carpenter scored third-period goals as the Bruins defeated the North Stars at Boston to end their longest losing streak in three years.

Goalie Reggie Lemelin snapped a five-game losing streak with 30 saves as the Bruins won for the first time in their last five games at Boston Garden.
