A Glendale man arrested last week on suspicion of bludgeoning his wife with a hammer pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of attempted murder and afflicting great bodily harm, court officials said.

Arthur Robert Cunningham, 53, denied the charges during a hearing at Glendale Municipal Court, said Deputy Dist. Atty. David Dahle. Cunningham is being held without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9.

Arjean Cunningham, 45, is being treated for severe lacerations on the head and the body at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. Her condition was upgraded Tuesday after surgery from critical to serious, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Cunningham was arrested last week when Los Angeles County deputy marshals arrived at the Cunninghams’ condominium on North Maryland Avenue to evict them, and found Arjean Cunningham unconscious and severely beaten in one of the rooms.
