Check Printer to Open Plant in Lancaster

Deluxe Corp., the nation’s largest supplier of bank checks, will open a Lancaster printing facility in fall 1992 that will initially employ 250 to 300 people, city officials announced Wednesday.

“I will venture to say this is the largest non-aerospace manufacturing facility in the Antelope Valley that was ever announced,” said Vern Lawson, executive director of the Lancaster Economic Development Corp.

Deluxe, based in St. Paul, Minn., currently has printing facilities and a regional office in Chatsworth. A leased facility in Chatsworth will close when the Lancaster plant opens, ultimately resulting in a net loss of approximately 135 jobs in the San Fernando Valley, said Wayne Crystal, the company’s regional manager and vice president.

Crystal said the jobs would be lost through attrition and that no layoffs will occur.

About 100 current employees who commute to the Chatsworth plant from the Antelope Valley will transfer to the new facility. The rest of the new plant’s employees will be hired locally, Crystal said.

The 50,000-square-foot facility is part of an expansion of the Lancaster Business Park. Deluxe plans to add 50,000 square feet to the facility, which will ultimately employ up to 500 people.
