Britain’s weakening economy suffered another jolt today when unemployment registered its biggest monthly rise in more than eight years.

Official figures showed the number of people without jobs jumped by 57,600 in November to more than 1.76 million in a nation paying the price of high inflation and facing recession.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbed to 6.2% from 6% in October.

Today’s report showed that unemployment increased in every region of the country last month, with the southeast, southwest and Wales the hardest hit.
