Dec. 24 is the deadline to register to vote in the Jan. 22 special election for the 1st District seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the seat being given up by retiring Supervisor Pete Schabarum.

Those over the age of 18 who live in the revised district--which stretches from El Sereno and Lincoln Heights, east to Irwindale and La Puente and southeast to Santa Fe Springs--can obtain voter registration applications at post offices, county offices and many banks.

The county registrar of voters also will mail registration applications to anyone who telephones 725-5919.

Although the registration deadline is Dec. 24, voter applications will be accepted by mail in the registrar’s office until Dec. 28, said registrar’s spokeswoman Marcia Ventura.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the Jan. 22 election, the top two finishers will be in a runoff Feb. 19. The close of voter registration for that contest will be Jan. 22.
