DWP Land Set Aside for Horse Trail Link

The Los Angeles City Council voted 12-0 Wednesday to set aside a 44-foot-long ribbon of land in Porter Ranch for use as part of the city’s growing but still incomplete Backbone Equestrian Trail.

The property, the site of the Department of Water and Power’s Susana Water Tank near Sesnon Boulevard and Crystal Springs Circle, was turned over to the city’s Recreation and Parks Department for use as a trail.

Jeannie Plumb, 12th District Councilman Hal Bernson’s adviser on equestrian issues, said the DWP property will link the existing trail that runs east along Sesnon with a planned portion extending westward across land owned by Porter Ranch Development Co.

When it seeks future subdivision-level approvals of its project, the company will be required to dedicate trails across its property, Plumb said.

The city and private property owners have now set aside land for about 70% of the proposed trail, Plumb said. When finished, the trail will run from O’Melveny Park in Granada Hills to the Chatsworth Reservoir in the northwestern San Fernando Valley.
