STATE VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS : Three O.C. Teams Vie for Titles in Fullerton

Volleyball championships will be decided in five divisions Saturday at the 14th annual State high school girls’ tournament at Cal State Fullerton.

In Division I, El Toro (21-4) takes on Lakewood St. Joseph (20-1) at 7 p.m.

El Toro is in the State finals for the first time. It will be the last match for Coach Mike Jagd, who said he will resign at the end of the season to study for his doctorate at the University of Colorado.

The Chargers, led by outside hitters Jaime Smith and Wendy Balut, advanced to the finals despite being on the road throughout the playoffs. They were at Santa Barbara in the section tournament first round, and at Poway, Arroyo Grande and Mountain View St. Francis in the State tournament.

In Division II, La Habra (24-3), playing for its third consecutive State title, meets San Jose Leland (26-4) at 5 p.m. La Habra, led by 6-foot-5 outside hitter Zrinka Kristich, takes a 20-match winning streak into the match.

The Division V match pits Capistrano Valley Christian (19-2) against Atherton Sacred Hart Prep (23-6) at 9 a.m.

Los Angeles Marymount (21-6) and Livermore Granada (35-2) play at 3 p.m. in the Division III title match. In Division IV, Long Beach St. Anthony (23-3) faces Grass Valley Bear River (30-3) at 11 a.m.
