NHL Story on AIDS Lacked One Point
There was one question begging to be asked in the story about AIDS and the NHL on Feb. 25. Why didn’t anyone quoted in the story discuss, or even hint at, the remotest possibility of the existence of gay NHL players?
Magic Johnson notwithstanding, a heterosexual male is still an atypical HIV carrier in North America. If an NHL player ever tests HIV-positive, there is a strong likelihood that he will have been infected through homosexual contact. But nobody talks about that.
In this homophobic society, I guess the idea of a gay male athlete is even more horrifying than that of an HIV-positive one.
