CAMARILLO : Agency Plans to Build Housing Units

Share

The Area Housing Authority of Ventura County hopes to start construction by year’s end of two to four public housing rental units on a parcel in Camarillo, the agency’s deputy director said Wednesday.

The new units will be built on a parcel of less than an acre on the corner of Mobil Avenue and Daily Drive, which the City Council recently transferred to the authority, Deputy Director Rochelle Stephens said.

These units will be added to Camarillo’s complement of 27 public housing units on Temple Avenue and 284 dwellings throughout the city whose residents receive rental assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The authority serves the cities of Simi Valley, Fillmore, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Ojai and unincorporated county areas.

Of those cities, Simi Valley and Fillmore have no public housing units, Stephens said.

The authority tries to advocate for more public housing in Ventura County, she said, because the waiting list for rental assistance vouchers is up to 2,500.

The list is so long that the authority stopped taking applications in November, she said.
