IRVINE : 13-Year Cable TV Contract Approved
The City Council on Tuesday gave initial approval to a 13-year cable TV service contract with Community Cablevision.
The council unanimously approved the contract after convening a brief, final public hearing, at which nobody spoke.
During earlier discussions, dozens of residents complained of poor picture quality and high price. But the council said earlier this month that it intended to approve the contract, which includes provisions for improved service.
The contract calls for the firm--owned by the Irvine Co.--to upgrade its cable transmission system to improve picture quality and service reliability, and to donate about $850,000 in video equipment and facilities to the city and school district to produce educational and community-oriented programs.
The number of channels will also increase, initially from 38 to 60, and to 80 in the year 2002.
The company’s 15-year contract with the city was to expire in August. The new contract will be considered in a second vote on May 12, then take effect if approved.
