L.A. Symposium Condemning Yugoslav Violence Draws 350
- Share via
About 350 people turned out Sunday for a symposium staged at the Islamic Center of Southern California to condemn the Serb-led bombardment of Sarajevo, the capital of the Bosnia-Herzegovina region that has declared its independence from Yugoslavia.
One speaker, local Croatian activist Chris Pandzic, likened the carnage in Sarajevo, where the 1984 Winter Olympics were held, with the recent riots in Los Angeles.
“Just like (Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F.) Gates, if the Serbs don’t go from Sarajevo, the bloody war will continue in the inner cities of Europe,” Pandzic said to rousing applause.
Retiring Rep. Mervyn Dymally (D-Compton) urged the Los Angeles audience to pressure the U.S. government to force a halt to the hostilities, noting that several congressional resolutions condemning the violence are pending.
