Compiled by Times correspondent Kay Saillant

As the deadline to register draws near, 5.1% more people are registered to vote in this November’s general election than in 1988. As of Monday, 345,305 Ventura County residents had registered to vote, compared to 328,458 registered voters for the 1988 election.

About 78% of eligible voters are registered. Many of those who are not registered are ineligible because they are not citizens. Here are tips on how to register:

Deadline: Registration deadline is Oct. 5.

Requirements: To register, you must be a U. S. citizen at least 18 years old. And you must be a resident of the state 29 days before the election.

Absentee balloting: Applications to vote absentee are on the back page of the sample ballot. They may also be obtained by sending a written request to Elections Division, County Government Center, 800 S. Victoria Avenue, Ventura 93009.
