Brazell, a former Estancia standout who played basketball and softball for Southern California College, returns for her second season as Irvine coach and sees the Vaqueros’ move from the South Coast to the Sea View League as a fortunate one. Unlike the previous league, in which Brazell said her team didn’t have a chance in most games, there are several Sea View teams Irvine figures to be competitive with. But the Vaqueros are still behind. “Other schools have kids who play in junior high together, but our kids touch a basketball their freshman year, and that is first time they touch a ball,” Brazell said. “That doesn’t help us at all, and that’s why we’re playing catch-up.” With only three players returning from last season’s team, Irvine will have to depend on younger players improving quickly. Of the four sophomores on varsity, three are getting significant playing time. Stevens is one of Brazell’s quick learners. She played junior varsity last season and didn’t start but made rapid progress and is now the team’s starting shooting guard.
