Los Angeles police Monday stepped up the search for two armed robbers whose getaway driver was fatally wounded by a security guard, then dumped by the gunmen outside a Koreatown video store.

The suspect, who police would only say was in his 20s, died Sunday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He had been hospitalized there since shortly after Friday’s 10:15 p.m. shooting outside Videotek Video in the 800 block of South Western Avenue, said Detective Dan Andrews of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Just before the shooting, two gunmen entered the store and ordered a clerk and two customers to lie on the floor, Andrews said.

“Once outside, the suspects confronted an armed security guard,” Andrews said. “The suspects fired multiple rounds at the security guard as they entered a waiting vehicle, driven by a third suspect.”

The guard, who was unhurt, returned fire. One bullet hit the driver in the head, Andrews said.
