U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL : VALLEY-AREA ROUNDUP : Lautenschlager Wins Berth in 3-Meter Finals

Janae Lautenschlager has been full of surprises.

On Friday, days after winning a silver medal in the one-meter springboard, she barely hung on to survive the preliminaries in the three-meter springboard.

Lautenschlager, from Northridge, scored 389.22 points to earn the 12th and final spot for Sunday’s finals.

Meanwhile, Nancy Janik, 32, from Simi Valley, remained relatively consistent. After placing fourth in the one-meter event, she is in third place in the three-meter competition with 431.76 points.

Mary Ellen Clark of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., leads the competition with 434.25 points.

In men’s diving, Ricky Wood, 20, of Sherman Oaks, is in sixth place after the preliminary rounds of the 10-meter platform events. Wood has 504.51 points. Chris Mantilla of Boca Raton, Fla., is in the lead with 554.64 points.

CANOE

David Spaulding, who learned to paddle in Ventura Harbor, won a gold medal in the men’s 1000-meter event at Canyon Lake. Spaulding’s time was four minutes 25.45 seconds. He finished more than four seconds in front of Devlin Murphy of Honolulu.

David Werland of Ventura placed sixth in a time of 4:40.74.

In the men’s 1000-meter doubles final, Werland and partner David Serafin of San Diego won a silver medal with a time of 4:13.78. Martin Lowenfish and Sandor Nyerges won easily in 4:09.76. Spaulding and partner Jirka Batlik of Newport Beach took the bronze in 4:14.69.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Christy Parker scored a goal with a little more than three minutes remaining in the first half to put the West in front to stay in a 10-5 victory over the East.

Parker, from Sherman Oaks, has scored three goals in Festival competition.
