Logue Holds On to Register First Sportsman Main Win

Dennis Logue of Mission Hills held off points leader Pat Mintey Jr. of Quartz Hill to post the first Sportsman main-event victory of his career before a crowd of 3,697 Saturday night at Saugus Speedway.

Logue, 31, ninth in points in only the second full season of a five-year career, started second and quickly moved into the lead. From there, Mintey, bidding for a third main-event victory of the season, stayed close throughout a race delayed several times by caution flags.

Terry Custer of Mission Hills finished third and Sean Woodside of Saugus finished fourth.

In other races, Dave Blankenship of Reseda won the 30-lap Grand American Modified main event ahead of Rod Johnson of Canyon Country and points leader Dave Phipps of Simi Valley.

In the 25-lap Street Stock oval main event, John Schultz of Valencia, third in the division’s points standings, drove to his first main-event victory of the season after posting 10 top-five finishes. Kirk Miller of Alta Loma finished second, Kelly Colgan of Shadow Hills was third and Greg Benner of Whittier ran fourth.

Dana Moore of Valencia won the 15-lap Street Stock oval semi-main event to lead four drivers into the main event. Keith Leonard of Lancaster, Richard Russo of Newhall and Randy Goldsmith of Cerritos also advanced.

Heat race winners included Richard Radei of Oxnard and Tim Huddleston of North Hills (Sportsman); Johnson and Robert Rice of Lakewood (Grand Am); Jeff Green of Los Alamitos, Rich Ocheltree of Van Nuys, Shaun Estes of Riverside and Kirk Miller of Alta Loma (Street Stock oval), and Brett Myers of Simi Valley (Street Stock figure-eight).
