Tragedy and Triumph / THE YEAR IN PICTURES

What images of 1993 will you remember? The uplifting ones? The great athlete cheered by his opposing fans. The high school girls basketball team leaping in ecstasy. The Marines returning home after trying to rescue a starving nation. Or the darkly awesome ones? Postal employees gathered in stunned grief after a killer rampaged among them? Barren hills where fire had erased peaceful neighborhoods. A boy in a hospital bed, slowly dying of gang violence. A stripe of orange flame at an air show, a demonstration that no one wanted to see. Was it the best of times of the worst of times? As usual, a goodly portion of both.
