Long Beach Can’t Handle Las Vegas

Nevada Las Vegas overcame a 10-point first-half deficit and held off Long Beach State down the stretch Saturday night to preserve a 74-70 Big West Conference basketball victory in front of a capacity crowd of 1,900 in the final game scheduled to be played in the 49ers’ campus gym.
Damian Smith made two free throws with eight seconds left to clinch the victory.
Reggie Manuel scored 24 points and Kebu Stewart had 21 for the Rebels. Mike Atkinson had 16 for Long Beach.
Stewart, who had 24 rebounds Feb. 19 in an 80-64 victory over UC Irvine, had 11 in the first half and finished with 16.
Long Beach (15-9, 9-7) got in early foul trouble and Nevada Las Vegas, which has won three in a row, took advantage, making 10 of 12 free throws in the first half.
A basket by Stewart helped the Rebels (13-11, 9-7) take a 50-43 lead with 12:45 left.
