LOS ANGELES : LAPD Officers to Study Spanish, Travel to Mexico

One of the Los Angeles Police Department’s top chiefs and 31 of his senior lead officers will study Spanish and live in Mexico for 10 days to learn more about that nation’s culture.

Deputy Chief Mark Kroeker of the South Bureau will lead the contingent to Guadalajara this year, LAPD Lt. Mike Downing said this week. The LAPD’s South Bureau is patrolled by officers from the Southeast, Southwest, 77th Street and Harbor stations.

LAPD Chief Willie L. Williams, Kroeker and other officials described the program during a news conference at Olvera Street.

Under Phase 1, Kroeker and the others will spend 2 1/2 hours a week studying Spanish for 10 weeks.

Under Phase 2, scheduled to begin in January, Kroeker and his senior lead officers will visit Guadalajara and live with families there for 10 days, Downing said.
