A Paramount man who got out of his car to help friends whose vehicle had broken down was killed Wednesday in a hit-and-run crash, a Highway Patrol officer said.

Javier Monje, 24, stopped alongside the northbound San Gabriel River Freeway near Del Amo Boulevard about 2 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Bill Dance. A few minutes later, a maroon or dark red Volkswagen “bug” drifted onto the shoulder and hit Monje, Dance said.

The driver of the Volkswagen continued northbound and was last seen near Rose Hills Road. The right headlight of the subcompact car was broken and there was damage to the right front, Dance said.
