DANA POINT : Work to Begin on 1993 Slide Damage

Share

Work is scheduled to begin Wednesday on a section of Coast Highway covered during a massive mudslide in early 1993. The $2.2-million project is expected to be completed, and that section of highway reopened, by January.

In February, 1993, a hillside collapsed, sending a 30-foot-high mountain of dirt and debris across four lanes of the highway, over the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad tracks and through a brick fence protecting a line of beachfront homes. The railroad tracks have since been cleared and the fence repaired.

The highway project culminates efforts by the cities of Dana Point, San Clemente, the California Coastal Commission, the California Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and affected property owners.
