SUN VALLEY : Truck Jackknifes Across Freeway Lanes

Share

A tractor-trailer heading north on the Golden State Freeway jackknifed Thursday morning when an out-of-control car ran into it, forcing the big rig over the concrete center divider with its trailer sprawled across the remaining lanes of traffic, authorities said.

There were no injuries in the accident, which began when Chun Yung of Los Angeles had problems with a tire shortly after 9 a.m. while driving in the fast lane. Yung lost control of his car and careened into the path of the truck, said Officer Mark Garrett of the California Highway Patrol.

The truck’s driver, Jesus Zepeda of Irwindale, in the third lane of the four-lane freeway, tried to avoid the car but then ran over its right front hood and dragged the passenger vehicle along as it swerved onto the south-bound side.

The tractor spilled about 20 gallons of its own diesel fuel onto the roadway, complicating efforts to clear the accident and move morning traffic along, Garrett said. All lanes were reopened at 11:43 a.m., he said.
