Unz on Brown

I am responding to Ron Unz’s satire of my economic strategy and plan to revitalize California’s economy (Column Right, July 28). Satire comes to mind since Unz’s misinterpretation of my proposals borders on the comical.

California is in the throes of its worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. After four years of Pete Wilson’s fiscal and economic mismanagement, it’s time for new leadership and new ideas to turn California around. Given his vigorous attacks during the Republican primary on Wilson’s failed economic record, Unz knows full well that California families cannot afford four more years of Wilson’s neglect.

I have put revitalizing California’s economy at the very top of my agenda. After four years of record job losses and business failures, it’s time for new economic leadership and an innovative partnership between the private and public sectors.

My plan starts with getting government out of the way of business, slashing red tape and cutting wasteful spending, and using the savings achieved to keep taxes down. It also includes tax incentives for job-creating businesses, expanded access to new capital for firms of all sizes, a modern, world-class work force development program and “California First” preferences in the awarding of state contracts.

It is a plan that has been praised and endorsed by business leaders, leading economists and other business experts.
