LAYOFFS: Job losses at Northrop Grumman Corp., announced Thursday (D1), include 2,400 positions at Palmdale and Pico Rivera, where the B-2 stealth bomber is built. By 1996, the remaining 8,000 jobs at those sites will also be in jeopardy, because the B-2 program is scheduled to be completed by the decade’s end. Says Northrop Grumman’s Terry Clawson: “As the program winds down, the people have to wind down too.”

NO SALE: The town of Gorman is no longer up for grabs. Realtor Glen Beer says the town, put up for sale last December by the Ralphs family of grocery store fame, is off the market. . . . Beer said there have been several serious offers, despite the $13.6-million price tag. The town includes a ranch, motel, restaurants and commercial land.

DEPARTURE: Valencia native Dee Dee Myers (above), who has served as President Clinton’s press secretary, appears to be on her way out, officials said Thursday. Myers, known for her humor and quick wit, is expected to give up her post at year’s end to State Department spokesman Michael McCurry (A35). . . . She became a casualty of the White House’s inability to capitalize on its successes.

YOUNG FASHION: Most high school students fashion themselves as snappy dressers who can simultaneously fit into the latest trend yet retain their individuality. But some, like Agoura High’s Jeff Melcher, who wears a court jester hat, just like to “stand out in the crowd.” . . . This year, girls wear more dresses and skirts, while boys still prefer baggy pants and shorts. See Valley Life! Page 34.

BACK HOME: CalArts was a pretty cozy campus before the earthquake, so it was tough for students and teachers to relocate all over the Santa Clarita Valley. But they’re all together again for the school’s 25th year. . . . CalArts has many talented alums, including: actor Ed Harris, director Tim Burton and painter David Salle. See Valley Life! Page 3.
