SEAL BEACH : Council OKs $136,800 Bid to Repair Pier

Council members have approved a contract for repair of the 89-year-old pier, hoping for complete restoration of the calamity-stricken structure before summer.

The pier is expected to be closed for about a week during repairs.

The City Council on Monday accepted a bid of $136,800 from the Connolly-Pacific Co. of Long Beach for repair of damage caused in a fire last May. A natural gas line under the pier was ignited by falling barbecue coals, causing about $350,000 in damage. The pier was closed until July, when the first phase of repairs was completed.

In 1983, large waves generated by an unusually fierce winter storm damaged the midsection of the pier and it was rebuilt. In 1992, a fire sparked by electrical wires partially burned the pier, and several pilings were damaged by the Landers earthquake.

The city’s insurance policy on the pier has a $100,000 deductible and the pier has no earthquake insurance. The city will pay $8,000 to complete earthquake repairs and $37,000 for gas line repairs, amounts included in the accepted bid.

Four bids were submitted to the city for pier repairs, ranging from a low of $109,954 to $249,000. But council members rejected the low bid because a repair item had been left off the estimate.
