SANTA ANA : District Will Dedicate High School
The Santa Ana Unified School District on Friday will celebrate the grand opening of its newest high school, a 2.5-acre campus named for famed labor leader Cesar Chavez, a spokeswoman said.
Members of Chavez’s family, district administrators and local civic leaders are expected to attend the ceremonies at 10 a.m. at the campus, 2128 S. Cypress Ave. The event is timed to coincide with Chavez’s birthday, spokeswoman Rosemary Gladden said.
Chavez, founding president of the United Farm Workers of America, is known for organizing nonviolent civil rights protests on behalf of migrant workers in the 1960s and 1970s. Last year, the Board of Education unanimously approved naming the school in his honor, she said.
The blue-and-gray building includes 17,700 square feet of space for 10 classrooms, two computer labs, a library and administrative offices. The state-funded project cost $4 million, Gladden said.
Cesar E. Chavez Alternative High School has been open to students since fall, Gladden said.
