CLUB REVIEW : Club With No Name Reopens at the Probe

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Club With No Name, the moniker promoter Dayle Gloria devised in 1989 after splitting with her partners in the seminal underground club Scream, is back on Thursday nights at the Probe--the weekly live music club’s point of origin. How long it will last at the venue in Hollywood is up to music supporters, who seem to be taking L.A.’s rich underground music scene more and more for granted.

From the recent lackluster turnout for a free Troubadour show by the talented group Flourescene to the demise of Club Lingerie, you’ve got to wonder: Where are the fans?

Club With No Name’s grand reopening last week attracted about 300 guests--a decent but not stellar showing. Too bad, because not only has the club returned to an all-ages venue, allowing folks under 21 to experience new bands, but it has also given the Probe a boost away from its stigma as a passe gothic club.

Besides seeing live performances from four bands from 9 p.m. till midnight (tonight’s scheduled lineup includes the Goops from New York, Kara’s Flowers and Silas Loder), Club With No Name guests can find respite in the billiard area or in one of the cavernous club’s many rooms. Between sets, Gloria’s in the deejay booth mixing alternative music and disco--expect everything from the Foo Fighters and Al Green to Rancid and the Spinners. For those who want to hit the dance floor after midnight, she continues deejaying until 2 a.m.
