A man with a handgun robbed a clerk in the garden center at the Target department store in Oxnard on Monday night, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Investigators closed off the garden portion of the store at 2505 Vineyard Ave. while police interviewed witnesses.

The man approached the clerk about 6:15 p.m., demanding money. There was no one else in the garden patio when the robbery occurred, police said.

The robber displayed a handgun and the clerk opened the cash register, Officer Luis McArthur said. He then “just reached in there and grabbed the money himself,” McArthur said.

Police arrived within three minutes of the robbery but were unable to locate the gunman. “He probably had a car waiting,” McArthur said.
